Abstract
The synthesis and single-crystal X-ray structure of a chiral manganese(IV) complex, [MnIVL2]·2DMF (1·2DMF) (H 2L = Schiff-base condensation product of (S)-(-)-2-amino-3-phenyl-1- propanol and salicylaldehyde), are described. Compound 1·2DMF crystallizes in the orthorhombic chiral P212121 space group. In the crystal structure, the interactions between [Mn IVL2] (1), complexes via C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds give rise to an intricate hydrogen bonding network. Crystals of 1·2DMF were further characterized by elemental analysis, room temperature magnetic moment determination, IR, UV-Vis and EPR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and circular dichroism (CD) studies. Complex 1·2DMF exhibits two redox waves at -0.47 and -0.89 V (versus SCE) in acetonitrile corresponding to the [Mn IVL2]/[MnIIIL2]1- and [MnIIIL2]1-/[MnIIL2] 2- couples, respectively. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd.
