The study on computational linguistics has become encouraging in developing computational models for automatic detection of sentiments in a given text be it a document or a social media posting though both the varieties project different class of problems for finding sentiments with them. This article discusses on some linguistic approaches known in the paradigm of natural language processing and their uses in sentiment detection. The approaches discussed are lexical analysis, corpora based, aspect based, social semantics and the trends of research in this field.
